Costa Careyes
The spectacular setting of Careyes' ideal climate and the man's popularity inspired and drew visitors from around the Globe.
More on Region's Cost - COSTA ALEGRE (COST OF JOY)
Bird's Eye View of Costa Careyes
The spectacular rugged topography of this unspoiled eight-mile-stretch of Mexico's Pacific Coast, 68 miles (I IO Km) north of Manzanillo and 99 miles (I 60 Km) south of Puerto Vallarta is a dramatic foil for the distinctive, environmentally sensitive architecture designs specific to this chic secluded 3,700-acre community. Brilliant in their elegant simplicity, a handful of luxury villas in banana, strawberry and tangerine hues sprinkled cliff top, hillside and beachfront exude panache with a classy Careyes flavor, their designs attuned to nature's rhythms and the unabashed pursuit of the good life.

Virtually uninhabited until less than two decades ago due to the area's uncommonly thick jungle vegetation and rugged Sierra Madre mountain ranges, Careyes was first settled by a discerning Italian banker who had searched the world for the optimum environment in which to live well amidst untouched nature, and in 17 years since he built his first home, Careyes has evolved into a sophisticated tropical paradise whose privileged inhabitants indulge their every whim.

With an always-pleasing climate, temperatures averaging 75o F with 345 days of sunshine annually, sailing, scuba diving, snorkeling, tennis and horseback riding are year-round options. Polo clubs from around the world converge on Careyes' two fields in Polo season. December through April, the exciting social season here with guests lists that read like Who's Who! In the clearest water imaginable, deep sea fishing for highly prized sport fish like marlin and sailfish is sensational. Lovers are lured to cozy coves naturally made for two; beachcombers scour the development's 15 pure white sand beaches. In the surrounding virgin jungle endangered animals find shelter, and more than 135 recorded bird species keep the most enthusiastic bird watchers occupied.

In the midst of this natural wonder, two-low level luxury beachfront resorts brimming with pampering services and state-of-the-art amenities anchor the affluent community.  The resort includes the all-inclusive ClubMed Playa Blanca and the prestigious The Careyes, formerly Hotel Bel-Air Costa Careyes. Since 1992 it has been completely remodeled by the exclusive Bel-Air Hotel Company, while retaining its distinct European flavor and traditional Mexican warmth in design elements including earthy but elegant Mexican tiles and decorative accents that were an essential part of the old hotel's charm. Built in gracious hacienda style around a beautifully tended courtyard forested with palms, the U-shaped complex resembles a Mediterranean village that is both sophisticated and rustic. Room facades are awash in scrubbed pastels; arched walkways covered, and luxurious suites boast private pools. Amenities include exquisite restaurants offering sophisticated cuisine with a European flair, a deli for picnics and late-night noshing, and a full service health and beauty spa, Movie Theater, library and a languorous serpentine swimming pool with swim-up bar. Personalized impeccable service and privacy are assured.

The Careyes plan began with the building of a thirty-room hotel shaped like a horseshoe, its stucco walls covered with brilliant bougainvillea. Once completed tourists from around the world began to visit Careyes attracted by the mystery and romance of Mexico and by the high adventure of the wilderness.

The spectacular setting of Careyes' ideal climate and the man's popularity inspired and drew visitors from around the Globe. World-renowned photographers came and captured the vitality of Costa Careyes in photographs published in Vogue, Town and Country, Architectural Digest and The Sports Illustrated Swim Suit issue. The filming of the Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous in the late 80's drew the International Jet Set. Still the place afforded space and such privacy that innumerable famous writers, stars and politicians found the peace, quiet, and anonymity to experience a gratifying vacation.
